It seems there is a serious recall of various 'wet' dog and cat foods manufactured by Menu Foods containing 'cuts and gravy'. These include some national brands (Iams, Eukanuba) and some store brands including Companion and Special Kitty which I know are sold in my market.

They are not quite certain of the actual contamination, but it appears to have caused kidney failure resulting in death in a few cases of cats and dogs so far in the US. Strangely enough the news release says it's not for release over US new services, even though I just found out about it on Channel News 4.

Please, if you have a cat or a dog, and you use either canned or pouch 'wet' food, follow the link to look at the recall list. The start of Gus' kidney disease predates this whole mess (we've been worried about his values for the past several months) but I can assure you that it's not fun at all to have to administer subcutaneous fluids to your pet. Please make certain your cat or dog isn't at risk.

Thanks for the links -- I do have some of those brands in the house, but not the UPCs in question. But I'll probably avoid buying more of those brands for a little while.

Argh! I'm trying to get his constipation under control and now this... Fortunately, I haven't bought any of the foods on the recall list, but it's scary to think I might have. Brr.

I've been adding pumpkin to his food and he's eating it. It seems to be helping a little, but... Do you think it would be all right to add some of the cat-lax stuff directly into the food? I'm having trouble getting him to take enough of it "straight."

Thanks for posting this!

Adding cat-lax to his food won't hurt him or adversely affect the medicine. When Gus gets balky, I just end up smearing it on his nose since he's got this bad habit of shaking it off of his paw!
